On the road.....

I'm taking a little time off and jumped in the truck with John for a few days. Of course I never go anywhere without some sort of stitching so I brought along 'Brown Egg Farm', a chart by Notforgotten Farm. I've had my linen prepped (serged and stained) and floss collected for some time.....stitching with the recommended dmc floss and 32 count linen. It's not much of a start, but it is a start. Once finished, it will find a spot on the sampler wall in my sewing room.
I also brought along a couple of other stitcheries....much simpler and easier to see when these old eyes get to tired for the smaller stuff. Once they are finished they will be available either at the local mercantile or in my Etsy shop.
Hope you had a great week and on your way to a fun weekend!

The Front Porch...

I've been trying to spend more time out on my front porch. We used to do that alot but for whatever reasons we got steered away from it.
If I get up early enough I can take my coffee and reading out to the porch and enjoy before the sun comes up over the trees.
I premember spending time at my grandparents and every evening after supper we would go outside and sit under the shade tree...visit with neighbors and another aunt and uncle that lived next door.
Aunt Evelyn wrote about the front porch in her book, as she remembered it and I'll share that with you today, as well as a few pics of what I see from my front porch...

"The communication center of home. Every house today needs a front porch. It does more for the neighborhood than anything else. There were no tv's to watch so after the dinner dishes were done we all went outside to sit on the porch. You would visit with the people on either side of you and across the street. Children would play up and down the street. Finally we would all lay down to see who would see the first star. Then they would say...
Star light star bright
First star I've seen tonight
I wish I may I wish I might
Have the wish I wish tonight.
Then we would find the big dipper, little dipper, north star, the bear, the milky way went all the way across the sky from north to south.
When a storm came up through the day we curled up in the porch swing. With the lightning flashing and thunder booming we felt safe in the swing. Grandma said 'the angels were bowling again'. Summer nights Grandma would tell us stories until we went to sleep.
We would spread an old quilt on the porch and play games, cut out paper dolls and dream about what life would be.
The world would be much better if we would visit with the neighbors  up and down the street. We don't want to come out of our nice cool houses and leave the tv.
The front porch sitting is a dying art, gone the way of the nickel cigar and 10¢ soda.
The lazy eveings we gathered on the porch the adults discussed new things-cars, farm machinery, prices of farm products, happenings in the nearby towns.
Sit on the porch in the evening, sip tea, watch the neighbor water their yard. Sleep with the front door open and screen door held with a simple hook and listen to the radio."
That's what Aunt Evelyn thought about the front porch.
I really enjoy sitting on my front porch when I take the time to do it, on an old, rickety, broken down glider,  that has seen many a better day but I can't bear to part with it. Maybe I'll give it a makeover this summer.
Take a little time out today and sit on your front porch.
Enjoy your day!

Project Planning....

I am in my first week of summer break and while I miss my little walking partner and helper, I will be glad to get to use most of my summer time stitching in one form or another. Yesterday, after finishing up an apron, I decided to delve into my stash of patterns. Most of them have been in my stash for a good while....in fact, I think some of them go back more than 10 years. Here's what I hope to be working on this summer..... You can see patterns and books from Sew Unique Creations, Barncat Primitives, Walnut Ridge Primitives, Notforgotten Farm, Mosey n Me, Netty LaCroix, Plum Pudding, Need'l Love, and a few others there....these designs/designers never fail.
I have even pulled out a few embroidery pieces....using the primitive style of stitching, of course. You'll see I have a small one already underway.
I have also been pondering the idea of having an open house here this fall. It's been alot of years since I've created on that level! A few pieces here and there to keep in a local shop is quite different than preparing for an open house event!  Then throw in the whole idea of a new venture in little girlie things.....
I don't think I'll have a problem finding anything to do with my time....which by the way, it's time to get back to stitching!
Enjoy your day!

Chocolate Chip Muffins

I had the ingredients sitting out on the counter for two days wanting to make them so finally .....this morning! A little more tweaking to the recipe and method....which most star bakers would disagree with. Shhh......
I also have a habit of jotting down recipes and unless there is an out of the ordinary step to the process, then I usually don't write down the instructions. Then I will make notes of what worked or didn't work or any variations or alterations to the recipe.
I've made these several times and each time a little something different and I think this time has it. So far. LOL So here ya go......

Chocolate Chip Muffins

Preheat the oven to 350°. Line 12 large muffin tins with parchment liners or spray with non-stick spray.

Sift together the following dry ingredients inti your mixer bowl.....
4 cups (scant)flour
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons baking powder (yes...tablespoons)
1 teaspoon salt
In another bowl or measuring pitcher combine the following.....
1 1/2 cups milk
2/3 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla (and if by "accident" you splash a tiny bit more...that's ok)
Slowly mix this into the dry ingredients....mix until well combined....
Stir in.....
1 1/2 cups miniature chocolate chips
Scoop into tins.
Bake til done....sorry...forgot to time them. Maybe 20 minutes? I pretty much test them for doneness like I do a cake....to the touch.
************
An afterthought....decrease the amount of cocolate chips in the mix then sprinkle a few on top of each muffin and give a sprinkle of sugar before baking. I thought to do this after scooping up one tray so I added this to the second tray....yum-mo!

Little Girlie Things...

I had a "day off" yesterday...Ely and Liz took a much needed day off and took Rylee to the zoo.
I had started this little sun top (Butterick 3846) on Friday and got it done for the most part but as I'm getting ready to tie it up to snap a pic I realize I made a slight booboo....yeah! I didn't close the end of the ties. So what do you do? Tie the ends and wah-la! Don't ya just love this little vintage peachy-pink calico? I think it's going to look great on lil' miss Rylee with a little pair of daisy dukes!
Next on the list was deconstructing an old pair of my bib-overalls. I've made several little denim aprons with various leftover snippets of fabrics without a lining but this time I wanted to pair the denim with homespun and line the apron. A salvaged back pocket cut down just a smidge with a bias border of homespun was simply perfect for this little aprons pocket. This will be listed in my etsy shop by the end of the week!
As I worked at deconstructing my old bibs, it took me back to a couple of things I read in Aunt Evelyns book....
"Practically nothing was ever discarded. The motto was "Make Do or Do Without"".
"When a quilt was made you could pick out your dresses-Dad's denim work shirt.  Some were made from wool coats and men's suits. They were tacked."
While I'm using a good portion of my old bibs, I'm sure I threw out way more than what my great grandmother would of.

Back in the day.....

It's Friday night...cupcakes for tomorrow afternoon are baked and I will put the frosting on in the morning. I am already in my robe with a cup of mint tea and I'm being drawn again to a "book" that my Aunt Evelyn wrote some time ago. Evelyn was my mothers oldest sister. She was born November 1928 and was 11 years older than Mother. They really grew up in very different times.
In a visit with her before she passed away last fall, she had shared with me the fact that she had written this "book". Uncle Bob often traveled with his work before fully retiring and one night while he was away, she sat down and just started writing and from what I can tell this was back in 1998.
I have already read through it once but I've been drawn back to it several times to reread certain parts of it.
It's just an assortment of memories.....her memories...and from time to time I thought I would share some of her memories with you. They're written in no particular order....just as they came to mind, far as I can tell.

"What can you remember as a small child? The first thing I can remember was my grandma Mag Summers telling me to not mess up her bed. She had a feather bed. She could make up that bed as smooth as could be. Didn't anyone ever bother her bed.
Grandma taught me how to do house work. It had to be perfect or you did it over."

She must of taught my Mom how to do housework too because Mom taught us the same way.

The photo I'm sharing is of my Grandpa Summers, Aunt Evelyn (at Grandpas right), Aunt Norene (at Grandpas left) and that's my Mama on his lap.

I hope you find some of her memories as interesting as I do.

What I'm workin' on...

I've been working on another Primitive Bettys chart.....It's her 'spring pillow tuck'. It's been kinda slow going...John had been home, weather has been super nice so that takes Rylee and I outside and I've had plenty of alteratons to keep me busy in my work hours.
I hope to get this finished up in the next few days and into my etsy shop.
That's what's going on in my little corner of the world....what's going on in yours?
